Equine
Swimming Pool
Swimming
has long been recognised as a therapeutic, safe exercise for horses.
For centuries people have taken horses to swim in the sea and in pools
and lakes both as a soothing treatment after strenuous exercise and
often for fun and relaxation. At Whitley farm we can now offer swimming
in our 36 meter, state-of-the-art equine pool for therapy, fun
and as a valuable part of a training programme.
Horses enjoy the totally non-weight bearing exercise that develops muscle
and improves stamina. Swimming adds variety for hard working equines
and builds confidence in youngsters. The addition of the high pressure
jet system built into the pool, increases the work rate in a safe and
controllable way proving this to be a stand alone fitness programme in
itself should the need arise.
For equines in convalescence, the movement of an injury can greatly
reduce lesions and scar tissue as well as preventing muscle wastage
and improving top line. The equine pool is especially useful in the
treatment laminitics and even for healthy horses who constantly loose
shoes or suffer from gravel and abscesses. As the cost of each session
is low, fitness and recovery programmes can be designed with swimming
as a fundamental component enabling us to provide a service unequalled
in Devon and Cornwall.
